Arianna Caruso's stunning strike secured a 1-0 victory for Italy against Belgium in their opening match of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025, marking a significant start for the Azzurre in Group B. The match, held at Stade de Tourbillon in Sion, Switzerland, saw Italy earn their first win in the Women's European Championship since 2017.

The first half was a rather cautious affair, but it sparked to life towards the end. Belgium's Tessa Wullaert, their all-time leading scorer, came close to breaking the deadlock, firing just wide of the near post. However, Italy capitalized on this let-off just minutes later. In the 44th minute, Lucia Di Guglielmo delivered a precise pass to Arianna Caruso, who was unmarked just outside the box. Caruso took a couple of touches to compose herself before unleashing a curling right-footed shot that nestled into the top corner of the net, past the outstretched arms of Belgian goalkeeper Lisa Lichtfus.

After the break, Belgium struggled to create clear-cut chances, while Italy looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Cristiana Girelli almost doubled Italy's lead in the 64th minute with a clever back-heeled attempt, but Lichtfus reacted sharply to make a fine save. Michela Cambiaghi, a second-half substitute, also went close, curling a shot just wide. Lichtfus was called into action again late on, tipping a Cambiaghi effort around the post to keep Belgium in the game. Ultimately, Italy's defense stood firm, denying Belgium any real opportunities to equalize and securing a valuable three points.

Arianna Caruso was named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance. In addition to scoring the winning goal, she dominated the midfield, winning tackles and recovering possession effectively. Her goal was a moment of brilliance, showcasing her technique and composure in a crucial moment.

Italy's coach, Andrea Soncin, expressed his satisfaction with the team's attitude and game plan. He acknowledged that there is room for improvement but was pleased with the winning start. For Belgium, the defeat leaves them with no margin for error in their remaining group matches if they aspire to reach the knockout stage.

This victory could prove pivotal for Italy in a challenging Group B, which also includes World Cup winner Spain and Portugal. With the top two teams progressing to the quarterfinals, Italy has gained an early advantage in what is expected to be a tight battle for qualification. This win also served as revenge for Italy, who had lost to Belgium in the group stage of Euro 2022 and had suffered three consecutive defeats against the Red Flames.

The match was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of Portuguese international Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident.
