Spain commenced their Euro 2025 campaign with a resounding 5-0 victory over Portugal, propelled by an inspiring performance from Esther González, who scored twice. The dominant display positions Spain at the top of Group B.

The match began with a poignant moment of silence to honor Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, following their tragic passing in a car accident earlier that day. Spain then quickly asserted their dominance, with Esther González opening the scoring in the second minute. González masterfully controlled a long ball from Olga Carmona with her shoulder before executing an improvised volley past Ines Pereira.

Just minutes later, Vicky Lopez doubled Spain's lead, timing her run perfectly to latch onto Mariona Caldentey's low cross and slot it home. Spain continued to control the game, with Alexia Putellas adding a third goal in the 41st minute, skillfully rounding Diana Gomes and curling a shot past Pereira. González then scored her second goal shortly after, capitalizing on a rebound after her initial shot was blocked.

The second half saw the return of Aitana Bonmati, who had been hospitalized with viral meningitis the previous week. Spain added a fifth goal in stoppage time, with Cristina Martin-Prieto heading in Salma Paralluelo's cross.

González's early goal was the fourth-earliest in Women's Euro history since 2013 and Spain's earliest ever. At 32 years old, González became the oldest player to score for Spain in the competition, while 18-year-old Vicky Lopez became the youngest.

Spain's victory was a statement of intent as they pursue their first Euros title. The team's cohesive play, with quick passing and constant movement, overwhelmed the Portuguese defense. Alexia Putellas showcased her leadership and skill, demonstrating her readiness to guide the team after missing Euro 2022 due to a knee injury.

Vicky Lopez's performance was particularly noteworthy, as the young player demonstrated maturity and technical ability beyond her years. Replacing Aitana Bonmati is a difficult task, but Lopez embraced the challenge, contributing significantly to Spain's dominant midfield display.
