The Women's Euro 2025 kicked off with emotional tributes and decisive victories for Spain and Italy. The opening matches were played under the shadow of the tragic death of Portuguese international Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who died in a car crash in Spain.

Prior to their match, the Spanish and Portuguese teams honored Jota and his brother with a moment of silence. Both teams wore black armbands as a sign of respect. Fans displayed banners and messages, including photos, in tribute to Jota and Silva. One banner read "Thanks for everything". The Portuguese Football Federation also expressed their condolences, with president Pedro Proenca describing Jota as an "extraordinary person".

Despite the somber atmosphere, Spain, considered a pre-tournament favorite, showcased their strength with a dominant 5-0 victory over Portugal. Esther Gonzalez scored twice, while Vicky Lopez, Alexia Putellas, and Cristina Martin-Prieto each added a goal. Spain's coach, Montse Tome, expressed her satisfaction with the team's quick start, which allowed them to control the game. The return of Aitana Bonmati, who played the final 10 minutes after recovering from viral meningitis, further boosted the Spanish side.

In the other Group B match, Italy secured a 1-0 win against Belgium. Arianna Caruso scored the decisive goal with a strike just before halftime. This victory marked Italy's first win in their opening game of a European Championship since 2009.

The results place Spain at the top of Group B, followed by Italy. The tournament continues with teams and fans alike remembering Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. A minute's silence will be observed at all matches on Thursday and Friday in the UEFA Women's Euro in remembrance.
