Nico Williams, the highly sought-after Spanish winger, has put an end to swirling transfer rumors by signing a new eight-year contract extension with Athletic Bilbao, committing his future to the club until 2035. This decision thwarts the aspirations of Barcelona and other top European clubs who were vying for his signature.

The 22-year-old, a key player for both Athletic Bilbao and the Spanish national team, has affirmed his commitment to his boyhood club, stating, "When it comes to making decisions, for me, the most important thing is to listen to your heart. I am where I want to be, with my people, this is my home".

Williams' previous contract was set to expire in 2027. The new agreement includes a significant increase to his release clause, reportedly raising it by more than 50% from the previous €58 million. It also comes with a salary increase.

Barcelona's interest in Williams had been well-documented throughout the summer. The Catalan club, under new manager Hansi Flick, were keen to bolster their attacking options and identified Williams as a prime target. Reports suggested that Barcelona sporting director Deco had held meetings with the player's agent, Félix Tainta, to discuss a potential move. Furthermore, young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal fueled speculation by posting a photo with Williams on social media.

However, Barcelona faced hurdles in securing the deal, primarily due to Financial Fair Play constraints. The club reportedly struggled to guarantee Williams' registration due to salary cap issues. This led to discussions about including a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for free if he couldn't be registered.

Athletic Bilbao, on the other hand, were determined to keep hold of their prized asset. The club reportedly rebuked fans who defaced a mural featuring Williams amid the Barcelona links. They also took steps to ensure Barcelona had the financial means to complete the transfer, demanding the release clause be paid in a single installment.

Bayern Munich were also reportedly in the race for Williams' signature, even submitting an improved contract offer. However, Williams ultimately chose to remain with Athletic Bilbao, a decision seen as a major win for the Basque club and a blow to both Barcelona and Bayern.

Williams' decision to stay at Athletic Bilbao underscores his deep connection to the club and the region. He joined the club's youth academy in 2013 and has since risen through the ranks to become a key player. Alongside his brother, Iñaki Williams, he helped the team win the Copa del Rey in 2024, their first major trophy in 40 years. His contributions have also been recognized on the international stage, as he was a member of Spain's Euro 2024-winning squad.
