The Montreal Canadiens have solidified their goaltending future by signing rookie Jakub Dobes to a two-year, one-way contract extension. The deal, announced on Sunday by General Manager Kent Hughes, will see Dobes earning an average of $965,000 per season from 2025-26 to 2026-27. This move demonstrates the team's confidence in the 24-year-old Czech netminder, who impressed during his first NHL season.

Dobes made a notable jump to the NHL in the 2024-25 season, showcasing his potential in 16 appearances for the Canadiens. He recorded a 7-4-3 record with a 2.74 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. His performance ranked him fourth in wins among NHL rookie goaltenders, and he was one of only five first-year goalies to achieve a shutout. Dobes's first NHL game was particularly memorable, as he secured a 4-0 shutout victory against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers on December 28, 2024.

The young goaltender also gained valuable experience in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, playing in three games and earning his first career playoff win against the Washington Capitals on April 25. Dobes' playoff appearance became necessary after an injury to starting goalie Sam Montembeault.

Drafted by the Canadiens in the fifth round (136th overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Dobes began the 2024-25 season with the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League (AHL). His strong performance there earned him a call-up to the Canadiens, where he quickly made an impact.

With this new contract, Dobes is expected to form a strong goaltending tandem with current starter Sam Montembeault. The Canadiens have been searching for a reliable backup, and Dobes's emergence has provided stability in the crease. The team previously traded Cayden Primeau to the Carolina Hurricanes, opening the door for Dobes to step into a more prominent role.

The one-way nature of Dobes's contract signifies the Canadiens' commitment to him, ensuring he receives the same NHL salary even if he plays in the AHL. This demonstrates the team's belief in his long-term potential and their desire to keep him within the organization.

The Canadiens' goaltending situation has been a topic of discussion throughout the season. Montembeault entered the season as the expected starter but has experienced some inconsistency. Dobes's strong play has created healthy competition and provided the team with a reliable option in net.

Looking ahead, the Canadiens seem well-positioned in goal with Dobes and Montembeault, both of whom are young and promising. The team also has Kaapo Kahkonen under contract for one more season, providing further depth. Additionally, the Canadiens signed goaltender Jacob Fowler to a three-year, entry-level contract. With a solid NHL debut and a promising future, Jakub Dobes's contract extension marks an important step for both the player and the Montreal Canadiens.
