Leeds United are reportedly closing in on Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, while Tottenham Hotspur have landed Japanese defender Kota Takai.

Leeds United have been pursuing Longstaff for quite some time, and it appears their persistence may finally pay off. The club has reportedly submitted a £12 million bid for the 27-year-old midfielder, comprised of a guaranteed £10 million with £2 million in potential add-ons. This is allegedly Leeds' third offer for Longstaff, demonstrating their strong interest in securing his services. Personal terms between Longstaff and Leeds have already been agreed upon, leaving the deal contingent on Newcastle United's acceptance of the offer.

Longstaff's current contract with Newcastle extends to June 2026, having been triggered by the club last year. Despite the extension, Longstaff is said to be open to the move, seeking regular first-team football. He also reportedly wants to ensure Newcastle receives a fee for him, rather than leaving on a free transfer next summer. As an academy graduate, any transfer fee received for Longstaff would be considered pure profit for Newcastle, potentially aiding their compliance with Premier League financial regulations.

Longstaff has been with Newcastle since the age of eight, progressing through their academy ranks. He has made 214 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 16 goals. However, his first-team opportunities have diminished, with players like Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton often preferred in midfield. The potential arrival of Anthony Elanga at Newcastle could further limit Longstaff's playing time.

Leeds United are keen to strengthen their squad following their promotion back to the Premier League. The acquisition of Longstaff would provide valuable Premier League experience to their midfield. Leeds have already brought in Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw, and Lukas Nmecha this summer and are reportedly close to signing Gabriel Gudmundsson. Besides Longstaff, Leeds are also reportedly interested in Hoffenheim's Anton Stach.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of 20-year-old Japanese defender Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale. Takai has signed a five-year contract with the club. While the financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, reports suggest Spurs paid around £5 million for the defender.

Takai is a product of Kawasaki Frontale's youth academy and has made 81 senior appearances for the club, including участие in the 2025 Asian Champions League final. He has also represented Japan at various youth levels and has four senior caps. Takai was named the J.League's best young player in 2024.

Takai's arrival further bolsters Tottenham's defensive options, joining the likes of Kevin Danso and Luka Vuskovic. New Tottenham manager Thomas Frank will be hoping that Takai can quickly adapt to the Premier League and compete for a starting spot in the team. Spurs have also been linked with Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze and West Ham United's Mohammed Kudus.
