The Toronto Maple Leafs and the San Jose Sharks completed a trade on Thursday, July 10, 2025, sending veteran forward Ryan Reaves to San Jose in exchange for defenseman Henry Thrun.

Thrun, a 24-year-old defenseman, had 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) in 60 games for the Sharks last season. He is under contract for one more season at a $1 million average annual value (AAV). Originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the fourth round (101st overall) in 2019, Thrun has accumulated 25 points (five goals, 20 assists) in 119 career NHL games. According to scouting reports, Thrun is a well-balanced defenseman and a good puck mover who can shoot the puck well and plays smart defensively. In the 2024-25 season, Thrun averaged just over 17 minutes of ice time per game and was utilized more on the penalty kill than on the power play.

Reaves, 38, is entering the final season of a three-year contract with a $1.35 million cap hit. In 35 regular-season games with the Maple Leafs last season, he recorded two assists. He did not participate in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Known for his physicality, Reaves has 137 points (63 goals, 74 assists) and 1,100 penalty minutes in 912 career regular-season games. He also has nine points (three goals, six assists) in 113 playoff games. Since his NHL debut in the 2010-11 season, Reaves ranks fourth in the NHL with 3,065 hits.

The trade provides the Maple Leafs with some additional cap space, freeing up approximately $350,000. Toronto had previously placed Reaves on waivers in March before assigning him to the AHL. While Reaves was brought in to provide toughness, he had limited impact on the scoresheet, registering just eight points in 84 games with the Leafs.

Thrun's performance during the 2024-2025 season saw him take on more defensive responsibility, often paired with defensive-minded players. While his offensive and defensive RAPM (regularized-adjusted plus-minus) numbers were below league average, he has shown an ability to contribute on both the power play and penalty kill. The acquisition of Thrun provides Toronto with a younger, less expensive defenseman who can contribute in a variety of situations.
