Oilers Explored Silovs Trade, But a Significant Roadblock Prevented a Deal From Materializing

The Edmonton Oilers reportedly expressed interest in acquiring goaltender Arturs Silovs before he was ultimately traded from the Vancouver Canucks to the Pittsburgh Penguins. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Oilers engaged in trade talks with Vancouver but ultimately decided to pass on the deal due to concerns about Silovs' fit with the team.

The primary issue that held the Oilers back was internal doubts about whether Silovs would be a significant upgrade over their current goaltending tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard. Seravalli reported that the Oilers weren't entirely convinced that Silovs was definitively better than what they already had.

The Oilers' hesitation stemmed from Silovs' limited NHL track record. While he demonstrated potential and had a stellar AHL postseason, earning Calder Cup MVP honors with a .931 save percentage, his performance in the NHL has been inconsistent. In nine starts with the Canucks last season, Silovs posted a 2-6-1 record with an .861 save percentage and a 3.65 goals-against average.

Given Skinner and Pickard's more proven numbers, the Oilers weren't prepared to take a chance on Silovs, especially without being certain that he would be an upgrade. This decision suggests that the Oilers have confidence in Skinner and Pickard, particularly with a new goalie coach in place.

Ultimately, the Penguins acquired Silovs for Chase Stillman and a 2027 fourth-round pick. The Oilers' decision not to match this offer indicates their belief that their current goaltending situation is adequate. It also suggests that they may have been limited in what they could offer. Bob Stauffer added that the Canucks may have been unwilling to trade Silovs within the same division if possible. He mentioned Michael DiPeitro and Nico Daws as potential waiver interests for the Oilers.

The Oilers' choice not to pursue Silovs highlights their focus on internal development and their faith in Skinner and Pickard. It remains to be seen whether this decision will pay off, but for now, the Oilers seem content with their goaltending situation.
