Leeds United have officially signed Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United for a fee understood to be in excess of £12 million. The 27-year-old midfielder has signed a four-year contract with the Whites, keeping him at Elland Road until the summer of 2029. Longstaff becomes Leeds' fifth signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Sebastiaan Bornauw, Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, and Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Longstaff, born in North Shields, joined Newcastle's academy at the age of nine. He made his senior debut for the Magpies in August 2018 in an EFL Cup match against Nottingham Forest. During his time at Newcastle, Longstaff made over 200 first-team appearances. He also played five times in the UEFA Champions League. A memorable moment for Longstaff was scoring in Newcastle's 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain. He was also a key figure in Newcastle's League Cup-winning squad last season, ending the club's 70-year trophy drought.

Longstaff expressed his excitement about joining Leeds United. He stated that it would take a lot for him to leave Newcastle and he wasn't going to leave just to go anywhere, so it had to be the right place for him and his family. He believes Leeds is a perfect fit. Longstaff also noted the amazing atmosphere at Elland Road and is looking forward to having that support on his side.

Leeds United described themselves as delighted to announce the signing of Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee. They highlighted that Longstaff brings experience on the European stage, having made five appearances in the UEFA Champions League in the 2023/24 season.

Newcastle United also released a statement thanking Longstaff for his outstanding contribution to the club and wishing him well for the future. They acknowledged his role in the club's recent successes, including the League Cup win and Champions League qualification.

With 171 Premier League appearances, Longstaff brings valuable top-flight experience to Daniel Farke's squad, who are preparing for their return to the Premier League after being promoted from the Championship. Leeds United's summer spending has now reached around £45 million.

Longstaff could make his debut for Leeds United in their pre-season friendly against Manchester United in Stockholm on July 19. Leeds will begin their Premier League campaign at home against Everton on August 18.
