The highly anticipated quarter-final clash between France and Germany at the Women's Euro 2025 took place on July 19th at St. Jakob-Park in Basel. This match was particularly significant, evoking memories of the 2022 semi-final where Germany defeated France 2-1. However, this time, France entered the match with momentum, boasting an unbeaten record in the tournament with three wins and an impressive 11 goals scored.

France approached the game with confidence, despite Germany's historical dominance as eight-time European champions. France's coach, Laurent Bonadei, acknowledged Germany as a benchmark opponent and a fantastic opportunity for growth. He emphasized the importance of such high-stakes matches for the development of the young players in the squad. Sakina Karchaoui echoed this sentiment, recognizing Germany's history but asserting that the current French squad is focused on writing their own legacy.

Germany, however, were looking to reset after a surprising 4-1 defeat against Sweden in their final group stage match. Coach Christian Wück faced challenges in adjusting the defense, with key players like Giulia Gwinn injured and Carlotta Wamser suspended. Despite these setbacks, the German squad was determined to give their all to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

The match was broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK, with coverage beginning an hour before the 9 PM CEST (8 PM UK time) kick-off.

France had progressed to the quarter-finals as winners of Group D, while Germany finished second in Group C. Statistically, France had lost all three previous encounters with Germany at the UEFA Women's Euro. Germany also won their only previous UEFA Women's Euro knockout tie against France, a 2-1 victory in the 2022 semi-final.

The predicted lineups for the match were: France: Peyraud-Magnin; De Almeida, Lakrar, Sombath, Bacha; Geyoro, Jean-François, Karchaoui; Cascarino, Katoto, Baltimore. Germany: Berger; Linder, Minge, Knaak, Kett; Senß, Nüsken; Brand, Dallmann, Bühl; Schüller.

Ultimately, France prevailed, securing a spot in the semi-finals against Spain. Sakina Karchaoui scored a penalty just before halftime, making it 2-0 for France.
