Ann-Katrin Berger's heroics have propelled Germany into the semi-finals of Euro 2025, overcoming a challenging match against France. The Gotham FC goalkeeper displayed exceptional skill, making a total of 11 saves during the game, and then saving two penalties in the shootout. Germany managed to secure a 6-5 penalty victory after a 1-1 draw, despite playing with ten players for a significant portion of the match.

The match began with an early setback for Germany when Kathrin Hendrich received a red card in the 13th minute for a hair-pull on Griedge Mbock, resulting in a penalty for France. Grace Geyoro successfully converted the penalty in the 15th minute, giving France an early lead. However, Germany quickly responded, with Sjoeke Nüsken scoring a header to level the score ten minutes later.

Throughout the game, Berger showcased her goalkeeping prowess, preventing France from extending their lead. In the second half, Nüsken had a chance to put Germany ahead with a penalty, but her shot was saved by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin. As the game progressed into extra time, Berger made an outstanding save to deny a potential own goal from Janina Minge. France also came close to scoring when Melvine Malard's shot hit the crossbar, ultimately leading to a penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, Berger proved to be the hero for Germany. She saved two penalties, including a crucial save against Alice Sombath, which secured Germany's place in the semi-finals. Berger also converted her own penalty, further solidifying her role as the match-winner.

Berger's performance was particularly remarkable considering the circumstances. Germany had to play with ten players for most of the match after Hendrich's early red card. Despite being a player down, Germany managed to hold their own against a strong French team, thanks to Berger's outstanding goalkeeping and the team's resilience.

According to Opta, Berger's nine saves during the 120 minutes of play were the second-most by a goalkeeper in a Women's Euros knockout match, only behind Daphne van Domselaar's eleven saves for the Netherlands against France in Euro 2022. Even though France had 73% possession and played against ten players from the 13th minute, they only managed 13 shots with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.7 before extra time. These statistics highlight Germany's defensive strength and Berger's exceptional performance in keeping France at bay.

Germany will now face Spain in the semi-finals. With Berger in top form, Germany will be a formidable opponent as they aim for a record 11th Women's EURO semi-final.
