With the NHL offseason still underway, teams are actively seeking opportunities to strengthen their rosters for the upcoming season, and Yegor Chinakhov's name has recently emerged in trade discussions. The 24-year-old forward has reportedly requested a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets, and while the team isn't in a rush to move him, they are open to offers. This situation could present a valuable opportunity for the Montreal Canadiens to acquire a player with significant potential.

Chinakhov, drafted 21st overall by Columbus in 2020, possesses offensive capabilities that align well with the Canadiens' current trajectory. He has accumulated 71 points in 175 career NHL games, including 34 goals. Despite facing injury challenges in the 2024-25 season, he recorded 15 points in 30 games, demonstrating his speed, skill, and quick release.

One of the primary concerns surrounding Chinakhov has been his availability, as he has struggled with injuries throughout his three seasons with the Blue Jackets and has been frequently moved between the NHL and the American Hockey League (AHL). However, his potential is evident when he is healthy and on the ice. He has showcased his ability to create scoring opportunities and still has room to develop into a more complete player.

For the Canadiens, who are focused on player development while aiming to improve, Chinakhov represents a worthwhile gamble. If the Canadiens can help him maintain his health and provide consistent playing time within a system that suits young, fast players, Chinakhov could realize his potential.

It has been reported that disagreements with his head coach contributed to Chinakhov's desire to be traded. Specifically, the issue seems to stem from a lack of communication regarding his role within the lineup.

The Blue Jackets had previously attempted to include Chinakhov in a trade package to acquire defenseman Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders. However, the Islanders ultimately preferred the Canadiens' offer.

While the Canadiens may have to compete with other teams for Chinakhov's services, his potential makes him a worthwhile target. The Toronto Maple Leafs, for instance, might also be interested in acquiring him to bolster their scoring depth. Columbus GM Don Waddell has stated he is not going to simply accept the best offer to appease Chinakhov and will only move him if he gets an acceptable offer.

Another Columbus forward, Dmitri Voronkov, was also reportedly involved in trade discussions, with the Blue Jackets even offering him in a package for Noah Dobson. Some believe Voronkov could be a more intriguing acquisition than Chinakhov.
