Following a disappointing 2024-25 season, the New York Rangers are looking to bounce back, heavily relying on centers J.T. Miller and Vincent Trocheck to lead by example and set the tone for the team. General manager Chris Drury has been focused on making the team tougher and better defensively.

J.T. Miller, who was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks mid-season in exchange for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a first-round pick, is expected to play a key role. Miller is no stranger to New York, having begun his career with the Rangers before being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He later joined the Canucks, where he blossomed into a star player, achieving three consecutive excellent seasons. In 2021-22, he recorded 32 goals and 67 assists, followed by 32 goals and 50 assists in 2022-23, and 37 goals and 66 assists in 2023-24. He also led the Canucks in points during the postseasons of 2019-20 and 2023-24. Last season, Miller's performance dipped slightly due to a personal leave of absence, but he still managed nine goals and 26 assists in 40 games before being traded to the Rangers.

Miller's impact on the Rangers was immediate and significant. He contributed offensively at even strength, delivered 76 hits, won 57.6 percent of his faceoffs, and played on both the power play and penalty kill. In 32 games with New York, he scored 13 goals and provided 22 assists. Furthermore, his presence helped Mika Zibanejad, who had been struggling at center, to improve his game after being moved to the wing.

Vincent Trocheck's leadership qualities are also expected to be crucial for the Rangers. After Jacob Trouba's departure, Trocheck stepped up as a leader, becoming a respected voice in the locker room, on the bench, and in interviews. Even during challenging times, Trocheck made himself available to the media to answer tough questions directly and honestly, easing the burden on his teammates. His team-first mentality is evident in his willingness to engage physically, holding himself accountable, and supporting his teammates. Trocheck's intensity, passion, and willingness to do the "dirty work" make him a heart-and-soul player for the Rangers. On the ice, he actively directs traffic, motivates teammates, encourages younger players, and engages with opponents.

Trocheck's dedication to the team is clear as he consistently puts the team's needs before his own, focusing on the name on the front of the jersey rather than personal glory. Whether battling in corners, blocking shots, back-checking, or standing up for teammates, Trocheck is always at the forefront. His energy and leadership are highly valued by his teammates.

The Rangers' decision to rely on Miller and Trocheck to lead by example reflects their desire to create a stronger, more resilient team. Both players bring unique qualities to the table: Miller, with his offensive prowess and all-around contribution, and Trocheck, with his vocal leadership and unwavering commitment. Their combined efforts will be essential in guiding the Rangers back to contention and achieving their goals for the upcoming season. In a game against the Florida Panthers on April 14, 2025, Trocheck scored a short-handed goal, assisted by Miller, further exemplifying their on-ice chemistry and leadership.
