The opening day of the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford, Manchester, saw a compelling battle unfold, with England working hard to keep India in check after the visitors posted 264/4 at stumps. After winning the toss, England elected to bowl first on what appeared to be a fairly flat wicket. India's innings was marked by resilient batting performances, but also a concerning injury to Rishabh Pant.

India's opening pair, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, provided a solid foundation, demonstrating admirable patience against the new ball. They saw off the entire morning session, posting a partnership of 78 runs. Rahul and Jaiswal managed to negate England's new-ball threat and thwart the bowlers. At lunch, India was in a commanding position at 78 for no loss.

England fought back after lunch, claiming three quick wickets and reducing India to 140/3. Chris Woakes made the initial breakthrough, dismissing Rahul for a well-made 46, with Zak Crawley taking the catch at third slip. Liam Dawson then accounted for Jaiswal, who was caught at first slip after reaching his half-century. Skipper Shubman Gill was then trapped LBW by Ben Stokes for 12.

Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant then combined to steady the innings, with Pant playing with his usual aggressive intent. The duo took India past 200, but their momentum was disrupted when Pant sustained a foot injury attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. Pant was forced to retire hurt on 37 and was stretchered off the field. The extent of Pant's injury remains a concern for India. Soon after, Sudharsan was dismissed by Stokes for a gritty 61.

Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur then batted steadily to see India through to the close of play. At stumps, Jadeja and Thakur were both unbeaten on 19.

England's bowlers toiled hard, with Ben Stokes leading the fightback by taking 2 crucial wickets. Chris Woakes and Liam Dawson each took a wicket.

The injury to Rishabh Pant was a major talking point at the end of the day. It remains to be seen whether he can play any further part in the Test. Anshul Kamboj made his debut for India in this Test.

Overall, the opening day was evenly contested. India will look to build on theirtotal on Day 2, while England will aim to restrict the Indiantotal and gain the upper hand. Play was halted early due to fading light.
