India's Success Amidst Gambhir's Questionable Strategies and Handling of Karun, Frustrating the Head Coach

India's performance in the ongoing Test series against England has been a topic of much discussion, with head coach Gautam Gambhir facing scrutiny for his tactical decisions. Despite a fighting draw in the fourth Test, India trails the series 2-1, leading to criticism of Gambhir's approach.

Sanjay Manjrekar has openly criticized Gambhir's strategies, suggesting that India has performed well "despite" some of his tactical decisions. He pointed out that Gambhir "hasn't made anything easier," particularly with some of his selections. Manjrekar alluded to India's previous losses under Gambhir, including a 3-0 defeat at home against New Zealand and a comfortable loss to Australia.

One specific point of contention has been Gambhir's explanation for Karun Nair's exclusion from the fourth Test. Gambhir stated that Nair wasn't dropped but rather that Sai Sudharsan was picked based on team combinations, specifically to have a left-hander at No. 3 against the English attack. He also mentioned Anshul Kamboj's selection due to the overcast conditions. Manjrekar dismissed this explanation, stating, "If someone is dropped, he is dropped".

Despite the criticism, India's recent draw in the fourth Test showcased the team's fighting spirit. A significant partnership between Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, followed by an unbeaten 203-run stand between Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, helped India salvage a draw. Gambhir praised the team's resilience, stating that they are fighting for "the common man back home" and that the match laid the foundation for the team. He also defended Shubman Gill, who is the new captain, against critics, highlighting his talent and the fact that he has already scored four centuries in the series.

The fourth Test also saw a moment of controversy when England captain Ben Stokes offered a handshake to end the match early, with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar approaching their centuries. India declined the offer, a decision supported by Gambhir, who questioned whether England would have done the same if their players were in a similar position. Gambhir said that both players deserved to reach their centuries after their efforts. Jadeja and Sundar went on to complete their centuries, securing the draw for India. Stokes' frustration was evident, and he sarcastically asked Jadeja if he wanted to score a hundred against Harry Brook.

Looking ahead to the fifth Test, Gambhir stated that no decision has been made regarding Jasprit Bumrah's participation. He emphasized that all the fast bowlers are fit and that the focus is on leveling the series. Despite acknowledging the team's inexperience, Gambhir believes that this is the best Indian team and is focused on achieving a 2-2 result.

Despite facing criticism and tactical questions, Gambhir has shown support for his players, particularly Rishabh Pant, whose courageous innings in the fourth Test, despite a fractured toe, was hailed as inspirational. Gambhir acknowledged that he usually avoids singling out individuals but made an exception for Pant, recognizing his impact on the team and the next generation.

The series remains poised for an exciting conclusion at The Oval, with India aiming to overcome the challenges and level the series.
