BCCI Plans Honest Talks with Kohli, Sharma Amid 2027 World Cup Age Concerns and Future Strategy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to have "honest conversations" with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma regarding their future in One Day International (ODI) cricket, with the 2027 World Cup in mind. As India transitions into a new era of cricket, the emergence of young stars has brought into question the roles of Kohli and Sharma, both nearing 40, in the team's future.

With the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, the BCCI is contemplating the future roles of Kohli, 36, and Sharma, 38. Both players have already retired from T20Is and Tests, focusing solely on ODIs. While they may participate in upcoming ODI series against Australia and South Africa, followed by potential matches against New Zealand and England in 2026, their long-term commitment to the ODI format remains uncertain.

A BCCI source confirmed that discussions regarding Kohli and Rohit's future are imminent. The primary concern revolves around their age and fitness leading up to the 2027 World Cup. The source emphasized the need for "honest, professional conversations" to assess their physical and mental state, as well as their potential contributions to the team.

Since the Champions Trophy in March, Kohli and Sharma have been absent from competitive cricket. This inactivity raises concerns about their rhythm and readiness for a new ODI cycle. While the BCCI generally requires fit players to participate in domestic cricket, exceptions are often made for legendary players like Kohli and Sharma.

India has not won an ODI World Cup since 2011, a period largely dominated by Kohli and Sharma. While Kohli remains one of India's fittest and most technically sound batters, and Sharma's leadership is highly valued in the shorter formats, their roles within the team need reassessment. The emergence of young, fearless players has ignited discussions about potentially transitioning the team's leadership and core.

The BCCI faces a crucial decision: whether to continue relying on these iconic players or to build a new ODI core. The coming months will be critical in determining whether Kohli and Sharma will consistently feature in ODIs or gradually make way for the next generation.

The board was reportedly surprised by the duo's decision to continue in ODIs after retiring from other formats. Rohit Sharma had previously expressed his desire to play more 50-over cricket. The BCCI will likely not pressure Kohli and Sharma to retire but seeks clarity on their commitment and readiness for the upcoming ODI cycle. The decision will depend on open conversations and evaluations of their mental and physical state.
