Liverpool Football Club has reportedly turned its attention to Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as they seek to bolster their defensive options ahead of the rapidly approaching transfer deadline. With the new season looming, Liverpool's manager, Arne Slot, is keen to reinforce the team's backline, and the club has initiated talks with Crystal Palace regarding a potential deal for the England international.

The need for defensive reinforcements at Anfield has become increasingly apparent. The recent sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £30 million, coupled with Joe Gomez's current injury, has left Liverpool with only a couple of fit senior central defenders. This situation was further highlighted during the Community Shield match against Crystal Palace, where Liverpool conceded twice, ultimately losing in a penalty shootout. Slot himself has acknowledged the team's defensive frailties, stating that they are conceding "too many goals".

Guehi has emerged as a prime target to address these concerns. The 25-year-old has been on Liverpool's radar for some time, with ongoing monitoring of his situation over the past year. Guehi's contract with Crystal Palace has only one year remaining, adding another layer of complexity to the potential transfer. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has admitted that the club might have to sell Guehi rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next summer. According to Steve Parish, to avoid losing players of Guehi's quality on a free transfer, the club would need to agree to a contract extension or reach some other kind of resolution.

Liverpool are believed to be in a favorable position to secure Guehi's signature, especially with other clubs, such as Newcastle, reportedly pursuing alternative targets. Newcastle had previously shown interest in Guehi, even making offers up to £65 million last summer, but have since shifted their focus to AC Milan's Malick Thiaw. Chelsea was also speculated to be interested, but they seem to be exploring other options.

However, Liverpool are unwilling to overpay for Guehi, especially considering he is in the final year of his contract. While Crystal Palace may value him at around £40 million, the actual transfer fee could be lower due to his contract situation.

In addition to Guehi, Liverpool are also reportedly considering other defensive options, including Parma's young talent Giovanni Leoni. Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Liverpool might even sign two centre-backs before the transfer window closes on September 1st.

The potential arrival of Guehi would not only provide immediate cover but also inject quality and depth into Liverpool's defense. Guehi is a full England international and is eager to play regularly to secure his place in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and is hoping to be a part of Thomas Tuchel's plans. With Liverpool aiming to compete for major trophies, including a stronger push in Europe after their Champions League elimination last season, strengthening the defense is crucial.

The coming weeks will be critical as Liverpool look to finalize their transfer business and ensure they have a squad capable of challenging for honors on all fronts. The pursuit of Marc Guehi underscores the club's determination to address their defensive vulnerabilities and build a solid foundation for the season ahead.
