Tottenham Hotspur suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final, relinquishing a late two-goal lead before losing 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The match, held at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy, saw Spurs, the reigning Europa League champions, initially dominate against the Champions League winners.

Spurs, managed by new coach Thomas Frank, appeared to be on their way to securing their first Super Cup title after goals from Micky van de Ven in the 39th minute and Cristian Romero in the 48th minute gave them a comfortable 2-0 advantage. Van de Ven's goal came from a rebound after PSG's new goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier, saved Joao Palhinha's effort. Romero doubled the lead with a header early in the second half.

However, PSG mounted a late comeback. Lee Kang-in ignited the Parisians' hopes with a goal in the 85th minute, and Gonçalo Ramos leveled the score in the fourth minute of injury time, forcing the game into a penalty shootout.

Despite Vitinha missing PSG's first penalty, Tottenham failed to capitalize. Chevalier saved Van de Ven's penalty, and Mathys Tel missed the target, allowing Nuno Mendes to score the decisive penalty for PSG. Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro all converted their penalties for Tottenham, but it was not enough.

This victory marks PSG's first-ever Super Cup title and their fifth trophy in 2025. It is also a perfect start to the new campaign for Luis Enrique's team. For Tottenham, the loss is a bitter pill to swallow after controlling the match for the majority of the 90 minutes.

The game also marked the competitive debut for Tottenham under their new manager, Thomas Frank, who joined the club from Brentford following the departure of Postecoglou. Several players were unavailable for selection due to injury, including Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin. Yves Bissouma was also absent due to disciplinary reasons. PSG were without goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, with Lucas Chevalier making his debut.

Looking ahead, Tottenham will begin their 2025-26 Premier League season with a home game against newly-promoted Burnley. PSG will start their Ligue 1 title defense with a match against Nantes.
