Huddersfield Town pulled off a shock victory against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, while Sheffield Wednesday secured a Yorkshire derby against Leeds United in the next round.

Huddersfield overcame Championship side Leicester City in a penalty shootout after an entertaining 2-2 draw. Huddersfield started strongly, with Ruben Roosken and David Kasumu having strong penalty shouts turned down early in the game. However, it was Leicester who took the lead nine minutes into the second half when Hamza Choudhury smashed a half-cleared ball into the top corner. Huddersfield responded when Roosken was awarded a penalty after being brought down by Choudhury. Dion Charles's spot-kick was saved, but Dan Vost headed home the rebound for his first senior goal.

Leicester regained the lead three minutes later, with Stephy Mavididi squaring for Harry Winks to curl the ball into the bottom corner. Again, Huddersfield responded, with Cameron Ashia claiming his second goal in two games with a fantastic effort into the top corner. The game went to a shootout, where Huddersfield prevailed 3-2, with goalkeeper Lee Nicholls saving efforts from Jordan Ayew and Kasey McAteer. Nicholls proved to be the hero for Huddersfield, securing their place in the next round. Huddersfield will visit Sunderland in the second round.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday also progressed to the next round after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Bolton Wanderers, eventually winning 4-2 on penalties. The Owls, fielding a youthful side with five teenagers, took the lead on three occasions, with Charlie McNeil, Ike Ugbo, and Reece Johnston all finding the net. However, Bolton responded each time, with Jordi Osei-Tutu, Thierry Gale, and Amario Cozier-Duberry leveling the score. Cozier-Duberry's stunning injury-time equalizer sent the game to penalties.

In the shootout, Wednesday held their nerve, with Pierce Charles making two saves to deny Aaron Morley and Max Conway. Experienced player Palmer stepped up to score the winning penalty, sending Wednesday through to the next round where they will face Leeds United in a Yorkshire derby. The Sheffield Wednesday team contained five teenagers who looked up for the task. From the opening exchanges, the young Owls attacked with energy, pressing all over the pitch.

The second round ties are scheduled to take place in the week commencing August 25th.
