The Indian sporting community is in mourning following the death of Dr. Vece Paes, a former Olympian and a towering figure in Indian sports, who passed away on August 14, 2025, at the age of 80. Dr. Paes, father of tennis legend Leander Paes, leaves behind a rich legacy as an athlete, a sports medicine pioneer, and an inspiration to generations.

Born in Goa in 1945, Vece Paes distinguished himself early as a versatile sportsman. He represented India in field hockey, winning a bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics. A skilled midfielder known for his tactical acumen and composure, he also contributed to India's strong performance at the 1971 Hockey World Cup. Beyond hockey, Paes showcased his athletic abilities in divisional cricket, football, and rugby. He later served as the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002.

After his hockey career, Dr. Paes transitioned into sports medicine, a then-developing field in India. As a physician, he played a crucial role in supporting Indian athletes through injuries and rehabilitation. He served as a doctor for various Indian sports contingents at international competitions, earning the respect of athletes and administrators. His work ethic showed that excellence in sports and science could go hand in hand.

The Paes family has a strong sports background. His wife, Jennifer Paes, was the captain of the Indian women's basketball team. Their son, Leander Paes, carried forward the Olympic tradition, winning a bronze medal in men's singles tennis at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Leander also won 18 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles, cementing his place as one of India's greatest tennis players. Vece Paes's influence extends beyond his own achievements, as he and his wife created a sporting family that motivated many people.

Dr. Paes had been battling advanced-stage Parkinson's disease. He was admitted to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday morning before his death. The family is waiting for his daughters to arrive from abroad before holding the last rites.

Tributes have poured in from across the Indian sporting fraternity, recognizing Dr. Paes's immense contribution to the nation's sporting heritage. His impact extends beyond medals and accolades; he touched the lives of countless athletes through his medical expertise and unwavering support. Vece Paes's legacy will endure as an example of dedication, versatility, and excellence in both sports and medicine.
