Ahead of their Premier League season opener against AFC Bournemouth on Friday, August 15, 2025, Liverpool Football Club paid a deeply emotional tribute to their late forward, Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025. The accident, which also claimed the life of his brother, Andre Silva, occurred shortly after Jota celebrated his first Premier League title with the Reds.

The atmosphere at Anfield was charged with emotion as fans, players, and staff alike mourned the loss of the 28-year-old Portuguese international. Jota's family, including his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their children, were present at the game.

Before the match commenced, a minute's silence was observed in remembrance of Diogo and Andre. The Kop and the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand were adorned with poignant mosaics displaying "DJ 20" and "AS 30," representing Jota's jersey number and Silva's age, respectively. As the mosaics were unveiled, the Liverpool faithful sang "You'll Never Walk Alone," followed by chants of "Oh he wears the number 20," echoing throughout the stadium.

Liverpool's players further honored Jota by wearing shirts and stadium jackets bearing a "Forever 20" emblem, a tribute that will continue throughout the season. In a significant gesture of respect, the club has also retired Jota's number 20 jersey.

Manager Arne Slot acknowledged the emotional weight of the occasion in his program notes, recognizing the profound impact of Jota's passing on the Liverpool community and the broader football world. He emphasized the club's unwavering support for Jota's family during this difficult time.

The absence of Jota was keenly felt by his former teammates. Alexis Mac Allister, a close friend of Jota, penned a heartfelt tribute, expressing the deep sense of loss and extending his condolences to Jota's family. Mac Allister acknowledged Jota's role in the team's recent Premier League triumph and the void his absence leaves.

The match against Bournemouth marked Liverpool's first Premier League game of the 2025/26 season, where they are aiming to defend the title. New signings Florian Wirtz, Huge Ekitike, and Jeremie Frimpong were set to make their league debuts. The team began the new football season with a 3-2 loss in penalties against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. Liverpool will face Newcastle on August 23 and Arsenal on August 30.
