Leeds United celebrated their return to the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Everton at Elland Road, thanks to a late penalty from debutant Lukas Nmecha. The match, decided by a controversial handball decision, saw Leeds dominate for long stretches, though Everton defended doggedly.

The game began with a minute's silence to honor former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Leeds then started with their trademark intensity, earning five corners in the first 14 minutes. Jordan Pickford, Everton's goalkeeper, was called into action early, denying Joel Piroe after a James Tarkowski mistake. Piroe was again denied, as Everton weathered the early storm. Leeds continued to create chances, with Pascal Struijk's header cleared off the line by Jake O'Brien and Willy Gnonto firing over the bar. Despite Leeds' dominance, the first half ended goalless, with the home side having registered 12 shots to Everton's zero.

The second half saw Leeds continue to press. Gnonto threatened again, shooting straight at Pickford, before drilling another shot into the side-netting. Everton's Tim Iroegbunam received a yellow card for a late challenge on Ethan Ampadu. Everton made their first substitution in the 71st minute, introducing Jack Grealish for his debut. Leeds responded with a triple substitution in the 78th minute, bringing on Lukas Nmecha, Ilia Gruev, and Jack Harrison.

The decisive moment arrived in the 84th minute when Anton Stach's shot struck Tarkowski on the arm inside the penalty area. Referee Chris Kavanagh's decision to award a penalty appeared harsh, but it was upheld by VAR. Nmecha stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom corner, sending the Elland Road crowd into raptures. Despite a late push from Everton and seven minutes of added time, Leeds held on for the win.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke handed debuts to Lucas Perri, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Anton Stach in his first lineup of the season. While Leeds dominated possession and created numerous chances, Everton struggled to create any meaningful opportunities. David Moyes, the Everton manager, will be frustrated by his team's performance, which lacked spark.

The victory marks a significant moment for Leeds as they aim to establish themselves back in the Premier League. For Everton, it's a disappointing start to the season, raising questions that need answering.
