Ella Shelton's 2024-25 season with the New York Sirens was a standout performance, solidifying her reputation as one of the premier defenders in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). Born on January 19, 1998, the Ingersoll, Ontario native brought a wealth of experience and skill to the Sirens' blueline.

Shelton's offensive contribution was notable for a defender. In 24 games, she scored 8 goals and assisted on 8 others, totaling 16 points. This output made her the leading goal-scorer among all defenders in the league. Her scoring touch and playmaking abilities were crucial for the Sirens, providing a significant boost from the back end. Beyond her offensive stats, Shelton played a pivotal role in the Sirens' defensive zone, averaging 24:32 of ice time per game.

Her efforts didn't go unnoticed, as she was named to the PWHL's First All-Star Team in 2024. This recognition underscored her impact on the league and her importance to the New York Sirens. Shelton also served as one of the alternate captains for the Sirens, demonstrating her leadership qualities and her influence within the team. She and Alex Carpenter were named the first alternate captains in team history.

One of the most memorable moments of Shelton's season came on January 1, 2024, when she scored the first goal in PWHL history in a game against Toronto. This historic goal not only marked a significant milestone for the league but also highlighted Shelton's ability to rise to the occasion and perform under pressure.

Before joining the PWHL, Shelton had a decorated career. She played college hockey at Clarkson University, where she won two national championships. After graduating, she joined the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) and played for Team Scotiabank. Internationally, Shelton has represented Canada on numerous occasions, winning gold medals at the IIHF Women's World Championships in 2021, 2022, and 2024, as well as at the 2022 Olympic Games. In the 2024 World Championship, she recorded a goal and two assists in a victory against Finland.

Despite her successful season, Shelton's time with the New York Sirens came to an end on June 24, 2025, when she was traded to the Toronto Sceptres. The Sirens received the third and 27th overall picks in the 2025 PWHL Draft in exchange for Shelton. With the third overall pick, New York selected Casey O'Brien, a forward from the University of Wisconsin, and with the 27th pick, they chose Maddi Wheeler, a forward from Ohio State.

Shelton's departure marks the end of an era for the Sirens, but her contributions to the team and the league will not be forgotten. Her skill, leadership, and historic goal have left a lasting legacy in New York, and she will undoubtedly continue to be a force to be reckoned with in Toronto.
