The Indian cricket team is potentially on the cusp of another leadership transition, this time in the One Day International (ODI) format. With a packed schedule and several senior players nearing the end of their international careers, the selectors and team management are evaluating long-term captaincy options. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes Rohit Sharma will retire from ODIs after the 2027 World Cup. Kaif has endorsed Shubman Gill as Sharma's successor in ODIs. However, recent reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might have other plans.

Kaif anticipates that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be Sharma's final appearance in the format, following his exits from T20Is and Test cricket. On his YouTube channel, Kaif highlighted Gill's impressive run-scoring record and leadership qualities, noting his Test captaincy and T20I vice-captaincy. He stated that Gill has scored 2,000 runs in the last three years and is the future captain. Gill's maturity and form, particularly during the series in England, have solidified his position as a future leader, according to chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Despite Kaif's confidence in Gill, some reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer is also a potential candidate. According to sources, the selectors view Iyer as a long-term replacement for Sharma. A report in Dainik Jagran indicates that Iyer is being considered as the long-term option to lead India in the 50-over format, possibly until the 2027 World Cup. Ambati Rayudu has also backed Iyer to be the next ODI captain. He praised Iyer's calmness and leadership abilities, citing his success in leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title and taking Punjab Kings to the final.

One reason Gill may not be considered for the ODI captaincy is workload management. Gill already shoulders plenty of responsibility, leading the Test team and serving as vice-captain in both ODIs and T20Is. The BCCI may be hesitant to give him the captaincy in all formats.

Sharma, who turned 38 this year, continues to lead the ODI side. With him and Virat Kohli already retired from T20s and Tests, speculation is growing that the October ODI series against Australia might mark their final appearance in international cricket. The BCCI officials are expected to meet after the Asia Cup to discuss the future roadmap, including conversations with Sharma and Kohli. If Sharma decides to step down, Iyer could take over as soon as the Australia series.

Ultimately, the decision of who will succeed Sharma as ODI captain rests with the BCCI and the selectors. While Kaif has publicly supported Gill, the selectors may prefer Iyer or another candidate. The timing of the transition will depend on Sharma's decision regarding his future in ODI cricket.
