Coleman Wong has etched his name in Hong Kong tennis history by qualifying for the main draw of the US Open. The 21-year-old secured his place with a hard-fought victory over Britain's Billy Harris in the final round of men's qualifying. Wong's achievement marks the first time a male player from Hong Kong will compete in a Grand Slam main draw.

Wong's path to the US Open was paved with impressive performances throughout the qualifying rounds. In his second qualifying match, he overcame Italy's Matteo Gigante, ranked 16th among qualifiers, with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. This victory propelled him to the final qualifying round against Harris, where he sealed his place in history. Wong defeated Harris 6-3, 6-4.

Only two men representing Hong Kong have ever reached a tennis major, with the most recent appearance dating back to 1954. Ip Koon-hung first played at Wimbledon in 1951 and then again 12 months later. Edward Tsai reached the second round in 1953 and 1954, but there have been no appearances at a major from a Hongkonger since then. No one from Hong Kong has ever appeared at a Grand Slam outside Wimbledon.

Wong's success is not entirely new to the United States, as he previously won the boys' doubles championship in 2021.
