Mohammed Siraj Reveals: How Playing Without Jasprit Bumrah Actually Improves His Performance and Game

Mohammed Siraj has finally shed light on why his performances often see an upward trajectory when Jasprit Bumrah is not part of the playing XI. In a recent interview, the Indian pacer delved into the dynamics of his role within the team, particularly highlighting the sense of responsibility he embraces when Bumrah is absent due to injury or workload management.

Siraj, who finished as the highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with 23 wickets, has grown into a reliable performer for India, especially when tasked with leading the pace attack. The numbers speak volumes about his impact. Across 41 Tests, Siraj averages 31.05. However, a closer look reveals a significant disparity: when Bumrah plays, Siraj's average rises to 35, but in Bumrah's absence, it remarkably decreases to 25. This suggests that Siraj thrives when given the responsibility to spearhead the bowling unit.

"When I get an opportunity to shoulder responsibility, even if you look at a mundane series, my performance always grows," Siraj explained. "Responsibility gives me a different kind of joy and boosts my confidence". He also acknowledged the external chatter surrounding his performances and how it motivated him to silence the critics. "I told you at Edgbaston that people are talking about me, and it's time to make all that talk stop," he stated. "I usually am very aware of what I'm doing and do not pay heed to what people are saying because people do not know my struggle. Despite that, I thought it's time to stop such talk because it was getting too much".

Siraj also emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere within the bowling unit, especially with Bumrah's absence. "With Jassi Bhai (Jasprit Bumrah) not being there due to his back injury and his workload being managed, I tried my bit to keep the positivity in the bowling unit," he said. "Whenever I was talking to my teammates, Akash Deep and all, I was trying to spread the belief that we can do it. We can repeat what we have done already".

His statement underscores his transformation into a leader within the team. With Bumrah often needing workload management and occasionally facing injuries, Siraj ensures that India always has a potent spearhead capable of delivering match-winning spells. This was evident in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, where he led the bowling attack in Bumrah's absence and played a crucial role in India winning two Tests.

Siraj's success isn't just about individual brilliance; it's also about his ability to inspire and motivate his fellow bowlers. By fostering a belief in their capabilities, he creates a cohesive and confident bowling unit that can overcome challenges and replicate past successes.

The stats further solidify Siraj's claim. His bowling average of 31.05 in Tests significantly drops to 25 when Bumrah is not in the XI. Moreover, his strike rate improves from 57 balls per wicket with Bumrah to 44 balls per wicket without him. These numbers highlight his increased effectiveness and impact when entrusted with greater responsibility.

Mohammed Siraj's journey is a testament to his resilience, leadership qualities, and unwavering self-belief. While he acknowledges Bumrah's exceptional skills, he has proven that he is more than capable of leading the Indian pace attack and delivering match-winning performances, ensuring India remains a formidable force in Test cricket.
