Pochettino to U.S. Stars: Compete for Your Spot, No Guaranteed Starting Place on Chelsea.

USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino has recalled Christian Pulisic to the national team, while also delivering a stern message to veteran players who were left off the September roster: "No one has a place for sure". Pochettino's comments highlight the competitive environment he is fostering as the team prepares for the upcoming friendlies against Korea Republic and Japan.

Pochettino named a 22-player roster, with one additional player to be added in the coming days, for the training camp ahead of the September matches against World Cup-bound opponents Korea Republic and Japan. Players are scheduled to report to New Jersey on August 31st. The USA will first host Korea Republic on Sept. 6 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J.. Following the match against Korea Republic, the USMNT will face Japan on September 9 in Columbus, Ohio.

The USMNT coach emphasized that past achievements and reputations will not guarantee a spot on the team. Every player will need to earn their place through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to the team's goals. Pochettino's focus extends beyond individual talent, prioritizing the collective mindset and the willingness to fight for the nation. He wants players who are proud to represent their country and who will compete with intensity in every game.

Several players will be joining the USMNT for the first time in 2025. Alex Zendejas appeared in each of the first four matches during Mauricio Pochettino's tenure last fall. The MLS duo of Roman Celentano and Sean Zawadzki took part in the 2024 January Camp, with Zawadzki earning his first appearance on Jan. 20 against Slovenia. Tristan Blackmon gets his first chance since January 2021. Goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann is also getting another look for the senior MNT for the first time since 2018.

Pochettino's emphasis on earning a place in the team comes after the USMNT's recent performance in the Nations League, where they were accused of lacking intensity. He is determined to instill a stronger mentality within the squad, one where players are prepared to match the intensity of their opponents and fight for every result.

The USMNT's upcoming friendlies against Korea Republic and Japan will be crucial in preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. These matches will provide an opportunity for players to prove themselves to Pochettino and demonstrate their commitment to the team. The coach will be closely evaluating each player's performance, not just in terms of skill, but also in terms of their mentality, work ethic, and ability to contribute to the team's overall success.

With the return of key players like Pulisic, Weah, and Dest, coupled with the emergence of new talent, the USMNT is aiming to build a formidable squad for the challenges ahead. Pochettino's message is clear: every player has a chance to be a part of the team, but they must earn it through their performance and dedication.
