Scottish Champions League Dream Crushed: Rangers Suffer Humiliating Six-Goal Defeat, Eliminated from Tournament

Rangers Football Club endured a nightmarish exit from the Champions League play-offs, suffering a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Club Brugge. The defeat, which translated to a 9-1 aggregate loss, heaps further pressure on manager Russell Martin.

The Scottish side faced an uphill battle after losing the first leg 3-1 at Ibrox. Their task became even more daunting when Nicolo Tresoldi headed in Brugge's first goal after just five minutes. Three minutes later, Rangers' right-back Max Aarons was shown a straight red card for a foul on Christos Tzolis.

Down to ten men, Rangers capitulated. Hans Vanaken, Joaquin Seys (twice), and Aleksandar Stankovic added to Brugge's tally, leaving the score at 5-0 by halftime. Tzolis scored Brugge's sixth goal early in the second half. While Rangers avoided further damage to the scoreline, the result was a crushing blow.

The loss means Rangers will miss out on Champions League football, costing the club an estimated £20 million and potentially more. They will now drop into the Europa League.

The defeat raises serious questions about Russell Martin's future at the club. With only three wins in his first ten games, Martin was already under pressure. The manner of the defeat, coupled with fan discontent, may force the club's owners to reconsider his position.

Rangers now face a difficult task to regroup before their upcoming match against Celtic. A defeat in that game would leave them nine points behind their rivals in the William Hill Premiership.

Martin's decision to drop midfielder Nicolas Raskin to the bench also came under scrutiny. Defender Nasser Djiga returned from suspension, and striker Danilo was given a starting place.
