India commenced their CAFA Nations Cup 2025 campaign with a significant 2-1 victory against Tajikistan, marking a promising start under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Khalid Jamil. The match, played on Tajikistan's home turf in Dushanbe, saw India secure their first win against the Central Asian side in 18 years.

The Blue Tigers started the match with intensity, quickly unsettling the hosts. Anwar Ali opened the scoring in the 4th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error following a long throw from Uvais. Just eight minutes later, Sandesh Jhingan doubled India's advantage, slamming home a rebound after Rahul Bheke's header was blocked from an Anwar Ali corner.

Tajikistan, however, responded resiliently, with Shahrom Samiev pulling a goal back in the 23rd minute, finishing off a smart move. The hosts maintained pressure, but India's defense held firm to maintain a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

The second half saw Tajikistan intensify their attack, fueled by a vocal home crowd. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu proved pivotal, making crucial saves to deny Jalilov, Safarov and Shukurov. India looked to counterattack through Vikram Partap Singh and Irfan Yadwad but struggled to find the finishing touch. A defining moment arrived in the 72nd minute when Tajikistan was awarded a penalty. However, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu saved Soirov's penalty, sparking celebrations among the Indian players.

The victory provides India with a strong start in Group B, boosting confidence ahead of their next match against Iran. The match also marked a new chapter for Indian football, with Khalid Jamil beginning his tenure as head coach. The squad saw some new faces, with senior player Sunil Chhetri absent.
