India commenced their CAFA Nations Cup 2025 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tajikistan, thanks to a stellar performance from goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. The match, which took place at the Hisor Central Stadium, marked a promising start for new head coach Khalid Jamil.

India started strong, scoring twice in the first 12 minutes. Anwar Ali opened the scoring with a well-placed shot following a throw-in from Muhammed Uvais. Shortly after, Sandesh Jhingan doubled the lead, capitalizing on a header from Rahul Bheke off Ali's cross. Tajikistan responded in the 22nd minute when Shahrom Samiev finished a move involving Akhtam Nazarov and Ehsoni Panshanbe, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

The second half saw Tajikistan increase their pressure, leading to a penalty in the 69th minute after Vikram Partap Singh fouled Rustam Soirov. However, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made a crucial save, denying Tajikistan the opportunity to equalize. India also had chances to extend their lead, with substitutes like Mahesh Singh Naorem injecting energy into the midfield.

This victory is India's first win against Tajikistan in 17 years and their first win in any competition since March. The win provides a significant boost to India's confidence as they prepare for their next match against Iran.

The CAFA Nations Cup 2025 is serving as crucial preparation for the Indian team ahead of the upcoming Asian Cup qualifying round matches. Despite the absence of key players like Sunil Chhetri and seven players from Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Khalid Jamil's squad showed resilience and determination. Jamil emphasized the importance of focusing on their own game and playing as a unit. He also highlighted the need to build a strong team for the future by integrating both junior and senior players.
