Akash Deep, the Indian pace bowler, has downplayed his significant contribution with the bat during the recent Test match at The Oval against England, despite his crucial innings that helped India secure a commanding position. While his batting heroics drew considerable attention, Akash Deep remains grounded, emphasizing his primary role as a bowler.

Akash Deep's unexpected batting performance at The Oval came as a surprise to many. He walked in to bat in the late stages of Day 2, with his main task to ensure that the team did not lose any more specialist batters. On Day 3, he defied expectations by scoring a vital 66 runs off 94 balls, including 12 boundaries, forming a 107-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. This unexpected resistance not only extended India's innings but also drained the energy out of the English attack. His innings, coupled with Washington Sundar's half-century, propelled India to a formidable total of 396, demoralizing the opposition.

Despite the praise for his batting, Akash Deep remains focused on his bowling. He acknowledged the importance of his innings, stating that it would be "very close to my heart, with the situation that we were in". However, he was quick to credit Yashasvi Jaiswal for his guidance and support during their partnership. "Yashasvi helped me a lot with the batting — he made sure I played fewer balls and guided me well, so credit to him too," Akash Deep said.

Akash Deep's focus on his bowling is understandable, given his impressive performances with the ball throughout the series. He finished the series with 13 wickets in three Tests, including a 10-wicket haul in Birmingham. His accuracy and willingness to bowl long spells have impressed many.

Akash Deep also lauded Mohammed Siraj, describing him as the "energy house" of the Indian team. He highlighted Siraj's relentless intensity and leadership of the pace attack, especially on the final day at The Oval, where he took responsibility and delivered. With Jasprit Bumrah playing only three Tests to manage his workload, Siraj took on the mantle of leading India's pace attack.

Currently, Akash Deep is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He has been advised to rest but has already started practicing and training. He aims to regain full fitness and rejoin the team when he is ready.

Akash Deep's performance at The Oval showcases his versatility as a cricketer. While his batting contribution was significant in that particular match, he remains committed to his primary role as a bowler. His focus, dedication, and team spirit make him a valuable asset to the Indian cricket team.
