Coleman Wong is setting his sights on Davis Cup success following a historic run at the US Open. The 21-year-old Hong Kong native, currently ranked No. 173 in the world, is brimming with confidence after a strong showing at the Grand Slam tournament.

Wong's US Open journey saw him make history as the first player from Hong Kong to win a Grand Slam singles match in the Open Era. He achieved this feat by defeating American Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets in the first round. He continued his winning streak by taking down Australian Adam Walton, propelling him to the third round, a first for any Hong Kong player at the US Open.

His run ended in a thrilling five-set battle against Russian Andrey Rublev, the world No. 15. Wong displayed remarkable resilience and skill, winning the first and fourth sets and delivering 25 aces. Despite the loss, Wong's performance earned him an army of new fans, who cheered him on throughout the three-hour-long match. His signature disguised drop shot proved particularly effective, repeatedly catching Rublev off guard.

Reflecting on his US Open experience, Wong expressed newfound belief in his potential. "I'm getting closer, and I've proved to myself that I can do it," he said regarding his goal to break into the top 100. "I need to keep believing. I can see that I have the potential and I can scare the big guys. I believe in myself more now". He noted the significance of reaching the US Open third round after competing in Challengers, proving his ability to push top players.

Rublev, despite his victory, acknowledged the challenge Wong presented. He described Wong as playing "with no fear, really aggressive" and admitted that he "had to fight for every ball to turn around the match". Rublev even revealed that Wong had beaten him in practice before the tournament, giving him the confidence to perform well at the US Open.

Wong's father, Bruce, who traveled to New York with his wife to support their son, expressed his pride and happiness. He highlighted that Coleman had defeated higher-ranked players in the earlier rounds and "punched above his weight against Rublev". Bruce Wong believes that the world now knows Coleman Wong is a player from Hong Kong to watch.

Looking ahead, Coleman Wong is scheduled to compete in the Davis Cup in Hong Kong in mid-September. Following the Davis Cup, he plans to participate in ATP Tour events in Chengdu, Beijing, and Shanghai.

Wong has a W/L record of 18-7 at the Davis Cup. In February 2025, Wong played a key role in Hong Kong, China's Davis Cup World Group II Playoff victory over Namibia. He teamed up with Kevin Wong to win a crucial doubles match and then secured the tie-clinching point by defeating Connor van Schalkwyk in the singles.

Coleman Wong's historic US Open performance has not only boosted his confidence but also inspired a new wave of tennis enthusiasts in Hong Kong. His focus now shifts to the Davis Cup, where he aims to contribute to his team's success and further solidify his position as a rising star in the world of tennis.
