Following his recent retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin has set his sights on expanding his T20 career by registering for the International League T20 (ILT20) auction. The auction is scheduled for September 30 in Dubai. Ashwin's entry into the ILT20 marks his first foray into foreign T20 leagues.

Ashwin, who retired from all formats of Indian cricket, including the IPL, on August 27, hinted at exploring opportunities in other T20 leagues. He confirmed his interest in the ILT20, stating, "Yes, I am in talks with the organisers. Hopefully, I will have a buyer if I register for the auction". The deadline for auction registrations is September 10.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) typically restricts active Indian male cricketers from participating in global T20 leagues to protect the IPL's value. Ashwin's retirement from Indian cricket now allows him to pursue these opportunities. He had previously retired from international cricket in December of last year.

Ashwin's decision to retire from the IPL was influenced by the demanding nature of the tournament's schedule. Despite potentially attracting interest from IPL teams for a few more years, he chose to prioritize exploring overseas leagues. Ashwin expressed his desire to enjoy cricket in the final stages of his career without regrets, stating that playing cricket brings him great joy.

If selected in the ILT20 auction, Ashwin would become the most prominent Indian cricketer to participate in the league. The ILT20, which began in January 2023, is transitioning to an IPL-style auction system for the first time. Previously, the league operated on a draft system. Other Indian players who have participated in the ILT20 include Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan, and Ambati Rayudu.

Ashwin brings extensive T20 experience to the ILT20, having played 221 IPL matches across five franchises: Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. He has taken 187 wickets in the IPL at an economy rate of 7.20 and a bowling average of 30.22. He also scored 833 runs in 98 IPL innings.

The ILT20 is scheduled to run from December 2 to January 4. The tournament features six teams, five of which are owned by Indian investors: MI Emirates, Gulf Giants, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Sharjah Warriors, Dubai Capitals and Desert Vipers. Dubai Capitals won the most recent edition of the tournament, defeating the Desert Vipers in the final.

Looking ahead, Ashwin may also consider participating in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA and The Hundred in England next year, potentially taking on player-cum-coach roles.
