Djed Spence's recent call-up to the England squad has been a major talking point in the football world, marking a significant milestone in the Tottenham Hotspur full-back's career. The 25-year-old has not shied away from acknowledging the challenges he has overcome to reach this point, even noting those who doubted him along the way.

Spence's journey to the England squad is a testament to his resilience and determination. After representing England at the Under-21 level, his consistent performances for Tottenham have earned him his first senior call-up. Spence's impressive form since the turn of the year has been a key factor in his selection, having missed only a handful of games since making his full Premier League debut in December 2024.

Tottenham's manager, Thomas Frank, has lauded Spence's call-up, emphasizing how well-deserved it is. Frank highlighted Spence's strong performances, particularly against Paris Saint-Germain in the European Super Cup final and in Premier League matches against Burnley and Manchester City. Spence's ability to effectively contain top wingers and contribute going forward has impressed many. Frank also noted Spence's versatility, as he can play on both the left and right sides of the defense.

Spence's journey has included a loan spell at Leeds United in the 2023-24 season, which was unfortunately hampered by a knee injury. However, he returned to Tottenham and seized his opportunity, becoming a key member of the squad. His first competitive goal for Tottenham came in an EFL Cup win over Coventry City in September 2024, and he earned his first start for the club in a Premier League victory against Southampton in December 2024.

The England call-up marks the culmination of a transformative period for Spence, who was once considered available for transfer. His perseverance and dedication have allowed him to force his way into the plans at Tottenham and earn recognition on the international stage. Spence's story is an example of what can be achieved through resilience and the ability to overcome adversity.

Spence joins Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson as the uncapped players in the 24-man squad named by Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia. The squad also sees the return of experienced players such as John Stones and Marcus Rashford. England, currently topping their qualifying group, will host Andorra at Villa Park before traveling to Belgrade to face Serbia.
