As the Edmonton Oilers gear up for another Stanley Cup run, the looming contract negotiations with Connor McDavid have been a topic of discussion among fans and analysts alike. McDavid, who is entering the final year of his eight-year, $100 million contract, is eligible to sign an extension. Despite the potential distraction, Oilers management appears unfazed by the situation.

Oilers CEO and president of hockey operations Jeff Jackson addressed the concerns on "Oilers Now," stating that the organization is "not nervous" about reaching a new agreement with McDavid. He expressed confidence that McDavid, who has spent his entire 10-year career with the Oilers, will remain in Edmonton. Jackson highlighted McDavid's strong connection to the city and his unwavering desire to win as key factors that will drive his decision.

McDavid himself has acknowledged the ongoing discussions, stating that he intends to take his time with the process. He emphasized that his primary focus is on winning in Edmonton and that he doesn't want the contract negotiations to become a distraction for the team. While he hasn't ruled out any options, including a max-term contract, there is speculation that he might opt for a shorter-term deal in the three-to-five-year range.

Jackson also mentioned that the Oilers aren't looking to compare McDavid's contract with that of Leon Draisaitl, despite Draisaitl's recent $112 million deal. He said that McDavid's situation is unique, and the team wants him to feel comfortable with both the salary and the contract length. Jackson believes that McDavid is not solely motivated by money but also wants the Oilers to have the financial flexibility to build a competitive team.

The increasing NHL salary cap, projected to reach at least $104 million next season, further complicates the negotiations. With the cap expected to rise even higher in subsequent years, McDavid's next contract is anticipated to set a new NHL salary record. Many players around the league are also waiting for McDavid to sign his deal, which could set the market for other star players who are also due for contract extensions.

While some fans may be experiencing a mix of confidence and unease, the Oilers management remains optimistic about securing McDavid's future in Edmonton. The team understands the importance of McDavid to the franchise and is committed to working with him to reach an agreement that benefits both sides.
