In a surprising turn of events, Ross Taylor, the former New Zealand cricket star, is making a comeback to international cricket at the age of 41, but not for the Black Caps. Taylor is set to represent Samoa in the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup qualifying series. This decision comes four years after his retirement from international cricket in early 2022.

Taylor, whose mother is Samoan, is eligible to play for Samoa. He will be playing under his full name, Leaupepe Luteru Ross Poutoa Lote Taylor. He aims to use his vast experience to help Samoa qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka.

Taylor expressed his excitement about representing Samoa, stating it's more than just a return to the sport he loves. He considers it a great honor to represent his heritage, culture, villages, and family. He is eager to contribute to the team and share his experience both on and off the field.

Taylor's last appearance for New Zealand was in early 2022. He became eligible to play for Samoa in April 2025, following the mandatory waiting period for switching national teams. He had always intended to give back to the islands in some capacity but initially envisioned coaching young children and donating gear. The opportunity to contribute as a player arose later.

Taylor is set to participate in the World Cup Asia-Pacific qualifying series in Oman in October. Samoa is in Group 3 with the host nation and Papua New Guinea. The qualifying tournament includes three groups of three teams, with the top two from each group advancing to the Super Six stage. The top three teams from the tournament will secure spots in the 2026 World Cup.

Taylor had to ensure his body was ready for the demands of international cricket again. He acknowledged that he isn't getting any younger and had to balance his training with his other commitments. Despite retiring from international cricket, he still has other work responsibilities.

During his career with New Zealand, Taylor played 450 matches across all formats, including 112 Test appearances. He was the first player to make 100 appearances in all three formats of the game.

Samoa qualified for the Asia-East Asia-Pacific T20 World Cup 2026 qualifier in Oman with wins over Vanuatu, Cook Islands, and Fiji. Taylor's inclusion in the squad is a significant boost for Samoa's chances.

The Samoa T20 World Cup Qualifier Squad includes: Caleb Jasmat (capt), Ross Taylor, Darius Visser, Sean Solia, Daniel Burgess, Noah Mead, Solomon Nash, Samson Sola, Douglas Finau, Sam French, Kurtis Hynam-Nyberg, Ben Mailata, Fereti Sululoto, Saumani Tiai, Ili Tugaga. Sean Solia, another New Zealand cricketer with experience playing for Auckland, is also in the squad.
