Lionel Messi, the Argentine superstar currently playing for Inter Miami, has cast doubt on his participation in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. At 38 years old, Messi acknowledges that his age is a significant factor when considering the physical demands of participating in another World Cup tournament.

In a recent post-match interview, Messi stated, "The same thing I said before: I don't think I'll play in the next World Cup. Given my age, the most logical thing is that it won't happen". However, he also added, "I'm excited, eager, but I'm taking it day by day, match by match". This suggests that while he considers it unlikely, he is not entirely closing the door on the possibility.

Messi emphasized that his decision will depend on his physical condition and how he feels closer to the event. "I'll continue as I have been, taking it day by day, trying to feel good, and above all, being honest with myself," he said. "When I feel good, I enjoy it. And if I'm not good, I have a bad time and I'd rather not be there. I'll see".

He further explained that he would assess his fitness and form after the current MLS season with Inter Miami and during the 2026 preseason. "I haven't made a decision about the World Cup," Messi stated. "I'll finish the season, then I'll have preseason, and there will be six months left. So, we'll see how I feel. Hopefully, I'll have a good preseason in 2026 and finish this MLS season well, and then I'll decide".

Messi's comments came after Argentina's 3-0 victory over Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier match. Messi scored twice in the match, which may have been his final competitive game on home soil. The sold-out stadium in Buenos Aires was filled with fans who wanted to show their appreciation for Messi's contributions to the national team.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his World Cup future, Messi affirmed his love for the game and his desire to continue playing as long as he feels capable. "I love this, I love playing and I never want it to end, but the moment is coming, I am aware, it will happen when it has to happen," he said.

Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni, has decided that Messi will rest and not travel with the team for the final qualifying match against Ecuador. Messi will likely return to play for Inter Miami in their upcoming MLS matches. He has scored 27 goals and provided 11 assists in 34 appearances for Inter Miami this season, although he has missed eight games due to injury.

Messi's current contract with Inter Miami runs through the end of 2025, and there is speculation about a possible contract extension. There have also been rumors about a potential return to Barcelona after his contract with Inter Miami expires, but neither the club nor Messi's representatives have commented on this possibility.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, fans worldwide eagerly await Messi's decision. Whether he chooses to participate or not, his impact on the sport and his legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time are undeniable.
