Mason Greenwood's absence from England consideration: Thomas Tuchel confirms he's never been a factor in team selection.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has stated that Mason Greenwood is not currently in his plans for the national team. This comes after Greenwood reportedly turned down an opportunity to represent Jamaica, fueling speculation about a potential return to the England squad.

Greenwood, who plays as a forward for Marseille, has only one senior England cap, which he earned in a match against Iceland in 2020. During that trip, he and Phil Foden were involved in a controversy for breaching COVID-19 quarantine rules. Greenwood was subsequently not selected for the national team, and his career faced further complications due to allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour. Although the charges were later dropped, his future with Manchester United became untenable.

Greenwood has since revitalized his career in France, becoming a key player for Marseille. His performances have led to discussions about his international future, particularly after Jamaica expressed interest in securing his services. Greenwood qualifies to play for Jamaica through his grandfather and obtained a passport in anticipation of a potential switch.

However, Jamaica's coach, Steve McClaren, revealed that Greenwood has decided not to commit to any international team at this time, preferring to focus on his club career. McClaren expressed disappointment but also acknowledged Greenwood's love for Jamaica and the possibility of future involvement.

Tuchel has confirmed that he has not spoken with Greenwood or his representatives. He indicated that since Greenwood was considering playing for Jamaica, England did not give his situation further thought. Tuchel clarified that Greenwood "is not in our thoughts for our team" and is "no priority at the moment," though he didn't completely rule out a future change.

Greenwood's international career remains uncertain. He first represented England at the U15 level and progressed through the U17, U18, and U21 levels. His debut for the senior team in 2020 was expected to be the start of a promising international career, but his subsequent absence has been notable. Despite his talent and potential, as highlighted by his nomination for the Kopa Trophy in 2021, his off-field issues have significantly impacted his opportunities. He finished fifth in the Kopa Trophy rankings.

For now, Greenwood is concentrating on his performances with Marseille. He was the joint top scorer of the 2024–25 Ligue 1, with 21 goals. While a return to the England squad isn't impossible, it is not something the current manager is considering.
