Manchester United and Trabzonspor Verbally Agree on Loan for Goalkeeper André Onana: Next Steps Loom

Manchester United and Trabzonspor have reportedly reached a verbal agreement for a loan deal involving goalkeeper André Onana. The deal hinges on Onana's approval, leaving the final decision in the player's hands.

The Turkish club is looking to sign Onana to replace Ugurcan Cakir, who was sold to Galatasaray for €36 million. The Super Lig market remains open until September 12th, giving Trabzonspor a window to complete the transfer.

Onana's future at Manchester United has been uncertain, especially after the arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for a reported £18.2 million on deadline day. Onana has also lost his place in the starting lineup to Altay Bayindir. His only appearance this season was in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town.

Reports indicate that Onana requested a new contract after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League, leading to a 25% wage reduction for the squad. This request did not sit well with the club's management. Despite previously expressing his intention to stay and fight for his place, Onana is now seriously considering the move to Trabzonspor, where he would likely get more playing time.

Trabzonspor, currently second in the Turkish Süper Lig, did not qualify for European competition this season. They are aiming to strengthen their squad to challenge Galatasaray for the league title. The club wants Onana to be ready for their match against Fenerbahce on September 14th.

Onana's potential departure would leave Manchester United with Lammens, Bayindir, and Tom Heaton as goalkeeping options. Some reports suggest that United manager Ruben Amorim was not entirely convinced by Onana, which led to the signing of Lammens. Onana's performances since joining United in 2023 have been inconsistent, marked by both impressive saves and costly errors.
