The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing for its 94th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28, 2025, in Mumbai, where the election of key office-bearers, including the president, will be a primary focus. With Roger Binny stepping down as president after turning 70, the question of whether the BCCI will once again choose a former player for the role is a topic of considerable discussion.

The BCCI has a history of presidents from diverse backgrounds, including politicians, royalty, and businessmen. In recent times, there has been a trend towards cricketers assuming leadership positions, exemplified by Sourav Ganguly's appointment in 2019 and Roger Binny's subsequent tenure. This has led to speculation about whether this trend will continue.

According to reports, a legendary Indian cricketer, known for breaking records, is under consideration for the post. Informal discussions have reportedly taken place with this individual, although it remains unclear whether they will accept the position. If finalized, this would continue the recent trend of former players taking on leadership roles within the BCCI.

However, the decision is not yet final, and a seasoned cricket administrator is also being considered. Rajeev Shukla, the current vice-president and interim president, is a strong contender. He may either continue as vice-president, be promoted to BCCI president, or take over as IPL chairman. Sources suggest a 60-40 chance of Shukla becoming president.

Several factors determine the eligibility of candidates for the BCCI presidency. A candidate must be an active member of a state cricket association and cannot hold an office in any other sports body to avoid conflicts of interest. They also should not have any criminal background or have violated the BCCI's constitution. The nomination process involves each state association putting forward a name, along with the necessary documents. If only one candidate is cleared, they are automatically elected president. Otherwise, an election is held via secret ballot.

The upcoming AGM is expected to bring some changes in the leadership. While the posts of Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Treasurer are likely to remain unchanged, elections will be held for the positions of President and Vice-President. The IPL chairman position may also see a change, with Anirudh Choudhury and Avishek Dalmiya being potential candidates.

The appointment of a former player as BCCI president could align with the central government's emphasis on increased athlete representation in sports bodies. However, the BCCI must also consider the administrative and political experience necessary to manage the complexities of Indian cricket.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to appoint another player-president will depend on a variety of factors, including the availability and willingness of suitable candidates, the BCCI's strategic goals, and the need to balance cricketing expertise with administrative acumen. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future leadership of the BCCI and the direction of Indian cricket.
