Evgeny Kuznetsov, the former Washington Capitals center, is planning an NHL comeback for the 2025-2026 season after playing in Russia's KHL during the 2024-2025 season. His agent, Shumi Babayev, has been in contact with multiple NHL teams, with more than 10 clubs expressing interest. Kuznetsov, now 33, spent 11 seasons with the Capitals, amassing 171 goals and 397 assists in 723 regular-season games. After a disappointing stint with the Carolina Hurricanes, Kuznetsov mutually terminated his contract to play in the KHL. Despite a decent season in Russia, Kuznetsov and his agent believe he can still perform at a high level in the NHL. While a return to the Capitals isn't out of the question, it's not a priority over other potential landing spots. As of early September 2025, Kuznetsov's agent stated that they are down to two teams and are resolving budget issues.

In other NHL news, the Vegas Golden Knights are prioritizing a contract extension for star center Jack Eichel. General Manager Kelly McCrimmon has acknowledged the importance of securing Eichel for the long term, stating that it "remains a priority". Eichel is entering the final year of his eight-year contract, and both sides are hoping to reach an agreement to keep him in Vegas. It is expected that Eichel's next deal could exceed $13 million per season, with some reports suggesting it could reach $14 or $15 million AAV. Eichel has been a key player for the Golden Knights since being traded from the Buffalo Sabres in 2021, helping the team win its first Stanley Cup in 2023. In the 2024 season, Eichel recorded a career-high 94 points in 77 games. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun believes it is unlikely that Eichel will land elsewhere, as the Golden Knights are focused on getting him extended.

Looking at other potential moves around the league, the Montreal Canadiens have ample salary-cap room after trading Carey Price to the San Jose Sharks. The Canadiens are reportedly looking to add an experienced second-line center. The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly considering trading defenseman Brandon Carlo to add a forward. The Pittsburgh Penguins may trade Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, and Erik Karlsson, even if they don't get the returns they want. The Calgary Flames and Connor Zary are negotiating a new contract, with Zary potentially signing a short-term deal worth around $3 million annually. The NHL has announced that the trade deadline for the 2025-26 season will be March 6, 2026.
