The Jacksonville Jaguars kicked off their 2025 season and the new regime under head coach Liam Coen and general manager James Gladstone with a dominant 26-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. The win was fueled by strong performances from quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne, as well as a revamped defense.

Etienne was a standout, rushing for 143 yards on the day. He showcased his explosiveness with a 71-yard run, the longest of his NFL career. Etienne's performance underscored the Jaguars' decision to keep him on the roster despite trade speculation during the offseason. His contributions extended beyond rushing, as he also added three receptions for 13 yards.

Lawrence completed 19 of 31 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. While his numbers weren't record-breaking, he efficiently managed the offense. Lawrence connected with tight end Hunter Long for a 6-yard touchdown, marking Long's first career touchdown reception and the Jaguars' first touchdown of the season. Despite throwing an interception, Lawrence demonstrated poise and control, leading the offense effectively.

Jacksonville's defense played a significant role in the victory. New additions Jourdan Lewis and Eric Murray made key plays, with Lewis's pass breakup leading to an interception by Foye Oluokun. Oluokun also forced a fumble from Panthers quarterback Bryce Young. The Jaguars' defense limited Young to 154 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. The defensive effort included a sack by Dawuane Smoot.

The Jaguars controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, allowing Lawrence to remain upright throughout the game. Rookie kicker Cam Little contributed with two field goals, including a 47-yarder. Brian Thomas Jr. added a rushing touchdown, further solidifying the Jaguars' offensive output.

The game experienced a delay of one hour and 16 minutes due to lightning in the area. At the time of the suspension, the Jaguars were leading 10-3. Play resumed at 3:10 p.m. ET.

The Panthers struggled throughout the game, with Young enduring another difficult outing. Carolina's offense failed to capitalize on opportunities, turning the ball over twice in the first half and on downs twice in the second half. Their only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a pass from Young to Chuba Hubbard.

The Jaguars' performance provided encouragement for the season ahead. Coach Liam Coen emphasized the importance of handling adversity, and the team demonstrated resilience after the weather delay. With a blend of returning talent and new additions, the Jaguars aim to improve upon their previous season and contend for a playoff spot.
