Spain delivered a resounding statement of intent in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, dismantling Turkey with a 6-0 victory in Konya. The match, held on Sunday, saw Spain dominate from start to finish, securing their place at the top of Group E with their second win in as many matches.

Mikel Merino was the star of the show, bagging a hat-trick to propel Spain to a commanding lead. His first goal came in the 22nd minute, capping off a brilliant team move with a powerful finish. He then added a second in first-half stoppage time, teed up by Mikel Oyarzabal, who had a hat-trick of assists. Merino completed his hat-trick in spectacular fashion in the second half, curling a stunning shot from range into the top corner.

Barcelona's Pedri Gonzalez also had a memorable outing, scoring twice. He opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a fine finish from the edge of the box. Later in the second half, he calmly slotted home his second goal, assisted by Oyarzabal, to make it 6-0. Ferran Torres contributed to the rout, finding the net in the 53rd minute after receiving a pass from Lamine Yamal.

The victory showcased the attacking prowess of Luis de la Fuente's side, who demonstrated quick, incisive passing and clinical finishing. The Spanish team completely controlled the match, and could have increased their lead even further.

While the scoreline reflected Spain's dominance, there was one concern for the team as Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams was taken off before halftime with a thigh injury. Despite this setback, Spain maintained their momentum and continued to create chances throughout the game.

The match was billed as a potential showdown between Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid's Arda Guler, but the gulf in class between the two sides meant that Guler was unable to make a significant impact. Although Guler set up Kerem Akturkoglu, who hit the post, he was ruled offside.

The result leaves Spain in a strong position in Group E, with six points from their opening two games. Their dominant performance against Turkey sends a clear message to their rivals as they aim to secure a place in the 2026 World Cup.
