A dramatic late goal from Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane has secured Tunisia's place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and fans. The Al Ahly midfielder's 94th-minute strike against Equatorial Guinea in Malabo sealed a 1-0 victory, guaranteeing Tunisia an unassailable lead in Group H of the CAF qualifiers. Tunisia has become the second African nation to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after Morocco.

The match appeared destined for a draw until Ben Romdhane, who had come on as a substitute for Ferjani Sassi, was teed up by fellow substitute Firas Chaouat. Ben Romdhane calmly slotted the ball home, sending the Tunisian team and their supporters into raptures.

Tunisia's qualification campaign has been remarkable, characterized by a solid defense and efficient attack. The team, coached by Sami Trabelsi, has not conceded a single goal in the qualifying matches. Their disciplined backline, led by Montassar Talbi and Dylan Bronn, has proven difficult for opponents to break down.

The victory against Equatorial Guinea marked Tunisia's seventh appearance at the FIFA World Cup and their third consecutive qualification. They previously participated in the 1978, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2018, and 2022 editions. This consistent presence on the world stage highlights Tunisia's growth as a footballing nation.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will be the first edition to feature 48 teams, offering more opportunities for African nations to participate. With nine direct qualification spots for Africa and a potential tenth through an inter-continental play-off, the competition for places was intense. Tunisia's early qualification reflects their dominance in Group H and their determination to compete against the world's best.

Other notable results in the CAF World Cup qualifiers saw Morocco maintain their perfect record in Group E with a 2-0 win over Zambia. Youssef En-Nesyri and Hamza Igamane scored for the Atlas Lions, who had already secured their qualification. Elsewhere, Mozambique kept their qualification hopes alive with a 2-0 victory against Botswana in Group G.
