The Indian national football team secured a morale-boosting third-place finish at the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, defeating Oman 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. The match, held at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan on September 8, 2025, saw Udanta Singh Kumam's late equalizer cancel out Jameel Al Yahmadi's earlier goal for Oman, leading to a tense extra time and eventual penalty shootout.

This victory marks India's first-ever win against Oman and a positive start for new head coach Khalid Jamil. After a challenging period marked by coaching uncertainties and a drop in FIFA rankings, this win provides a much-needed confidence boost for Indian football.

Oman, ranked 79th in the world, dominated possession in the first half, but the Indian defense, led by Anwar Ali and Rahul Bheke, remained resolute. India had their chances, with Anwar Ali's header testing the Omani goalkeeper early on. However, it was Oman who broke the deadlock in the 55th minute through Al Yahmadi, capitalizing on a defensive error.

Despite going behind, India responded well, with Jamil's substitutions adding fresh impetus to the attack. Udanta Singh, who came on as a substitute, equalized in the 80th minute, heading home a long throw-in from Rahul Bheke. The game went into extra time, and Oman were reduced to ten men when Ali Al Busaidi was sent off in the 96th minute.

Despite the man advantage, India couldn't find a winner in extra time, and the match went to penalties. India started strong, with Lallianzuala Chhangte and Rahul Bheke converting their spot-kicks, while Oman missed their first two attempts. However, Oman's goalkeeper saved Anwar Ali's effort, and Udanta missed his penalty, bringing Oman back into the contest.

In the end, it was veteran goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu who proved to be the hero, saving Oman's final penalty to secure a 3-2 shootout victory for India. This win gave India the bronze medal in their debut appearance in the CAFA Nations Cup.

Khalid Jamil's tactical changes and attacking substitutions proved crucial in India's comeback. The win not only secured third place but also showcased the team's resilience and fighting spirit. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu's heroics in the penalty shootout and Jamil's attacking strategy sparked renewed hope for Indian football.
