Thomas Tuchel is backing his young England squad to rise to the occasion in their World Cup qualifier against Serbia in Belgrade. Despite starting the qualifying campaign with four wins, Tuchel is under pressure to deliver a standout performance, particularly after an uninspired 2-0 victory over Andorra. He sees the intimidating atmosphere of the Rajko Mitic Stadium as an opportunity to ignite his reign.

Tuchel acknowledged the challenges, including the absence of key players and the inexperience within the squad. However, he expressed confidence in his team's ability to handle the hostile environment. Tuchel highlighted the intimidating nature of the stadium, including its exceptionally long tunnel, but framed it as part of the unique experience of playing for the national team and striving for a World Cup.

The Football Association of Serbia (FSS) has appealed to its supporters to avoid any behavior that could lead to further sanctions from FIFA. This follows a fine imposed on the FSS in June for "discrimination and racist abuse" during a match against Andorra. The FSS has requested fans attending the game against England to "send out an image to the world that will make us all proud". FIFA has also imposed a reduction in the stadium capacity by 15% as further punishment for the behavior of Serbian supporters during their game against Andorra in June.

England faces what will likely be the toughest test of their campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. A win in Belgrade would put them in a strong position to secure a spot in the United States. However, Tuchel's preparations have been hampered by injuries to key creative players, depleting his options in defense and midfield. Cole Palmer (groin) and Bukayo Saka (hamstring) were injured before the squad was named, while Jude Bellingham is still recovering from shoulder surgery.

Tuchel has also indicated he is open to more direct tactics, potentially incorporating long throws and long balls into England's attack. He believes these strategies could provide an edge, particularly given the conditions expected at the World Cup. This approach reflects a growing trend in the Premier League, where teams are increasingly utilizing long throws as an attacking weapon. Tuchel liked the fact England scored nothing goals against Andorra from crosses and says he plans to work on throw-ins, free kicks and keeper Jordan Pickford making long clearances.

Despite recent criticism of England's performance, particularly their reliance on sideways and backwards passes, Tuchel remains optimistic. He believes the match in Belgrade presents an opportunity for his team to demonstrate their quality and determination. He is confident that facing Serbia in such an environment will bring out the best in his players.

Possible England Lineup: Pickford; Lewis-Skelly, Burn, Guéhi, James; Rice, Anderson; Gordon, Eze, Bowen; Kane.
