The Tennessee Titans' season opener against the Denver Broncos on September 7, 2025, was a disappointing one, marked by self-inflicted wounds that hampered rookie quarterback Cam Ward's NFL debut. The Titans ultimately fell to the Broncos 20-12, in a game filled with missed opportunities and costly errors.

Ward, the highly touted first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, faced a tough challenge against a formidable Denver defense. While he displayed moments of poise and potential, the team's overall performance failed to provide him with adequate support. Ward completed 12 of 28 passes for 112 yards. He wasn't able to throw any touchdowns and fumbled once.

One of the most glaring issues for the Titans was their inability to protect Ward. He was sacked six times, tying an unfortunate NFL record for the most sacks taken by a No. 1 overall pick in their debut. This put him in the same company as David Carr, who also suffered six sacks in his first game back in 2002. The Titans' offensive line struggled to contain the Broncos' pass rush, consistently putting Ward under duress and limiting his ability to make plays.

Beyond the offensive line struggles, the Titans' receivers also contributed to Ward's difficulties. There were "four to five dropped passes" that could have potentially changed the complexion of the game. These missed catches not only stalled drives but also further eroded Ward's confidence and rhythm.

Penalties were another major problem for Tennessee, with the team racking up 13 penalties for a total of 131 yards. These penalties often came at critical moments, negating positive plays and extending Denver drives. Coach Brian Callahan acknowledged the detrimental impact of these errors, stating the team had "some things to clean up".

Callahan also took responsibility for a missed opportunity to challenge a call on a long pass to rookie Elic Ayomanor that was ruled incomplete. Replays suggested that Ayomanor's elbow came down inbounds, which, according to NFL rules, would have constituted a completion. Callahan admitted his misinterpretation of the rule and said, "We should have challenged the play".

Despite the numerous setbacks, Ward showcased glimpses of his potential. He demonstrated his ability to fit the ball into tight windows and make downfield throws. In the first quarter, Ward led the Titans on a drive that resulted in a field goal, their longest drive of the game. He also displayed his athleticism by avoiding a sack and connecting with Tony Pollard for a 29-yard gain.

The Titans' defense did generate three turnovers and recovered a fumbled punt, providing the offense with opportunities to score. However, the offense struggled to capitalize, failing to find the end zone and settling for four field goals. The Titans were also plagued by third-down struggles, converting only 2 of 14 attempts.

Looking ahead, the Titans will need to address their numerous issues quickly to better support Ward and improve their chances of success. The team will face the Los Angeles Rams in their home opener in Week 2.
