Scotland took a significant step towards World Cup 2026 qualification with a 2-0 victory over Belarus in a match held behind closed doors in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary. The unusual circumstances, a consequence of UEFA sanctions against Belarus for their support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, created a strange atmosphere for what was a crucial game for Scotland. Despite the lack of fans, Scotland secured a vital three points, placing them in a strong position in Group C.

The match itself was a hard-fought contest. Scotland had the better of the first half, but struggled to break the deadlock. Just before halftime, however, Scotland's persistence paid off. John McGinn found space to cross the ball, picking out Scott McTominay, who headed it back across goal for Che Adams to slide in and score. The goal came shortly after Billy Gilmour's attempt from range forced a save that saw the ball tipped onto the post.

Early in the second half, Scotland maintained control, but a second goal was needed to ease any nerves. It arrived in the 65th minute, courtesy of an own goal. A clever passage of play between Gilmour and Adams resulted in Gilmour squaring the ball towards McTominay, but Belarus defender Zakhar Volkov inadvertently headed it into his own net. Scotland had further chances to extend their lead, with Adams and McGinn both presented with opportunities, but the score remained 2-0.

This victory marks Scotland's first win in World Cup 2026 qualifying and extends their impressive away record in FIFA World Cup Qualifying to four wins and one draw in their last five games. With four points from their opening two away games, they sit second in Group C, level on points with Denmark, who defeated Greece 3-0. Scotland's next qualifier is at Hampden against Greece.

The absence of fans due to the UEFA sanctions created an atypical matchday experience. The game was held at ZTE Arena in Zalaegerszeg, near the Austrian and Slovenian borders.

The result is a positive one for Scotland as they aim to reach their first World Cup since 1998.
