Bay FC and head coach Albertin Montoya will part ways at the end of the 2025 season. The organization announced the change on Monday, September 8, 2025, stating that Montoya has decided to step down as the club enters its next phase after two startup seasons.

Montoya was appointed Bay FC's first head coach on September 27, 2023. He guided the team to the NWSL playoffs in its inaugural season, setting a record for regular-season wins by an expansion franchise with 11 victories. Bay FC became only the second expansion club to reach the postseason in league history. However, the team has struggled this season and currently sits in 12th place in the league with a 4-10-5 record. Bay FC is coming off their fourth consecutive loss against Kansas City Current.

Bay FC's Chair, Alan Waxman, thanked Montoya for his leadership and dedication in launching the club and establishing its foundation. Waxman acknowledged Montoya's knowledge and passion for the game, which led to the team's early success, including making the playoffs in its inaugural season.

Montoya expressed his love for the players, staff, and fans, stating that they have built a culture and style of play that he believes will compete for championships in the years to come. He thanked the Bay FC organization for their support and stated he looks forward to finishing the season strong and for the club continuing to accomplish great things.

The announcement follows an independent investigation into Montoya's conduct after a report in early March where some players accused him of bullying. The NWSL investigation concluded that Montoya "caused emotional harm" to players, and the league recommended corrective educational courses. However, the investigation found that Montoya did not violate the NWSL harassment policy. Montoya previously served as the interim coach for the Washington Spirit in 2022 and as the head coach of the U.S. women's national U-17 team from 2011-12. He is also known for his experience as a youth girls soccer coach in the Bay Area, developing several players who went on to play in college and professionally.

Kay Cossington will be leading the sporting efforts of the club moving forward, including the selection of the next head coach. Bay FC has undergone numerous changes in the past year, starting with the departure of its original general manager, Lucy Rushton. Sources indicated there had been tension between her and Montoya, leading to her departure.
