In a stunning turn of events in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, Suriname defeated El Salvador 2-1 on Monday. The match, held at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador, saw Suriname secure their first victory against El Salvador since 1968.

The game began with an early goal from Radinio Balker, a Dutch-born defender for England's Huddersfield Town, who put Suriname ahead with a header in the 12th minute. El Salvador appeared to equalize in the 29th minute through Brayan Gil, but the goal was overturned after a video review. El Salvador eventually found their equalizer in the 73rd minute when Suriname defender Anfernee Dijksteel scored an own goal. However, Suriname's Dhoraso Klas then scored in the 81st minute, securing the win for the visitors.

This victory is a significant achievement for Suriname, who have historically struggled against El Salvador. Prior to this match, El Salvador led the all-time series 8-2 with one draw. Suriname's only previous win against El Salvador was in December 1968, during the qualifiers for the 1970 Mexico World Cup. Moreover, Suriname had been winless in their last eight matches against El Salvador.

The win holds major implications for Group A of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Suriname's victory over El Salvador shakes up the group standings. El Salvador, who previously defeated Guatemala 1-0, entered the match with the aim of securing another victory and solidifying their position at the top of the group. Meanwhile, Suriname had drawn 0-0 with Panama in their opening match. With this result, Suriname now has four points, while El Salvador remains on three. In the other Group A match on Monday, Panama and Guatemala played to a 1-1 draw.

Both teams are navigating a changed CONCACAF final round qualifying format due to Mexico, Canada, and the United States co-hosting the 2026 World Cup. The last 12 teams were divided into three groups of four, with the winners of each group directly qualifying for the World Cup. The two second-place teams will advance to playoffs with nations from other confederations.

Suriname's coach, Stanley Menzo, has focused on building a well-organized defense, often utilizing a five-player backline. However, this defensive approach has sometimes come at the cost of offensive output, with the team struggling to score in recent matches. El Salvador, coached by Hernán Darío Gómez, has faced consistency issues despite a strong team dynamic.

Looking ahead, Suriname will host Guatemala on October 10, while El Salvador will face Suriname again on November 13.
